Insurance Condition Survey
Your insurer needs a survey. Here is how to make it work for you
Being asked for a survey can feel like a hurdle. Joe makes the process straightforward, provides a clear report structured to meet insurer requirements.
What is an Insurance Survey?
An Insurance Condition Survey is required by insurance companies when there is a change of ownership, or when your yacht or motorboat reaches a certain age. The survey verifies that your vessel is in a seaworthy condition and meets the standards required for insurance coverage.
Joe has carried out insurance surveys for yacht owners with British, European and American based insurers. Requirements can vary between providers, so understanding exactly what your insurer needs before the survey takes place keeps the process straightforward and cost effective.
The survey examines the structural integrity, safety systems, and overall condition of the yacht. Any issues identified can be addressed before they become problems with your coverage.
Important Note
Joe's reports are structured to meet the requirements of all major marine insurers. If you're unsure what your policy requires, Joe can advise before the survey takes place.

Do you need one?
When is an Insurance Survey Required?
Insurance surveys are typically required in specific circumstances. If you're unsure whether you need one, contact your insurance provider or ask Joe for guidance.
Change of ownership - your new insurer needs assurance
Buying a boat? Your new insurer could require a condition survey before agreeing to cover it. This protects you as much as them.
Your yacht reaches a certain age
Older vessels are inspected more closely. If your yacht has reached a certain age, your insurer may require a survey to confirm it still meets their standards, even with a clean claims history.
You are switching insurance providers
Moving to a new insurer often triggers a survey requirement. This is their way of starting the relationship with a clear picture of your vessel's condition.
After significant modifications or repairs
Had major work done? Structural changes, re-engines, or significant repairs can all prompt your insurer to request a fresh survey to update their records.
Following an extended period out of commission
A yacht that's been laid up or unused for a long period can deteriorate in ways that aren't obvious. Insurers want confidence that the vessel is seaworthy before cover resumes.
Insurer requests verification of condition
Sometimes insurers request a survey with little explanation. If you have received one of these requests and are not sure what it means for your cover, Joe can help you navigate it.
Combined with Valuation
Combining both into a single inspection saves time, reduces cost, and means only one haul-out. Joe can provide a single comprehensive report covering both condition and current market value.
