MCA Coding

Operating your yacht commercially under the UK or other Red Ensign flag? Here is what the coding process involves.

MCA coding is a legal requirement for UK & Red Ensign flagged vessels under 24 metres being operated commercially. Joe is authorised to carry out compliance surveys through IIMS, RYA, YDSA and MECAL.

MCA Coding

What is MCA SCV2 Coding?

If you have a UK or Red Ensign-flagged yacht under 24 metres, being operated commercially, you are required to comply with one of the MCA Codes of Practice for small craft.

Many existing vessels are coded under MGN 280, however this has now been phased out for new vessels. From 12 December 2025, the Sport or Pleasure Vessel Code supersedes MGN 280. Joe is fully up to date with the new requirements and what they mean for owners and operators

The inspection verifies that the vessel meets the safety and operational standards required for the certificate to be issued. Any defects are reported to the owner or managing agent. Depending on severity, a second inspection may be required before the certificate can be issued.

For vessels over 24 metres load line length, coding is carried out by the classification societies or flag state. Contact them to discuss your requirements.

Joe is an authorised examiner for RYA, one of the MCA's approved certifying authorities for small commercial vessels.

Categories

Areas of Operation

When applying for MCA coding, the area of operation needs to be specified. There are seven categories of operation.

If you are unsure which category applies to your operation, Joe can advise before the survey takes place.

Category 6 - Within 3 miles of land and not more than a 3-mile radius from either the nominated point of departure to sea or the seaward boundary of categorized waters. Strict favourable weather and daylight only

Category 5 - Within 3 miles of land and not more than a 3-mile radius from either the point of departure to sea or the seaward boundary of categorised waters, in favourable weather

Category 4 - operating within 20 miles from a safe haven, within 10 miles from a point of departure, in favourable weather and daylight

Category 3 - operating within 20 miles from a safe haven, in favourable weather and daylight

Category 2 - operating within 60 miles of a safe haven

Category 1 - operating within 150 miles from a safe haven

Category 0 - unrestricted operation

The Process

How It Works

Initial Enquiry

The owner or managing agent needs to decide which certifying authority they would like to be coded through. Joe can assist with this.

SCV1 Application Form Completed

An SCV1 form is completed with the yacht's details and intended area of operation, and sent directly to the chosen certifying authority. Once the certifying authority has received the application the offical process starts.

Coding Inspection

The inspection is carried out both ashore and afloat. Some form of stability assessment will be required.

Defects Resolved

Any defects are reported and rectified, any additional visits are only required for major issues.

Certificate Issued

The survey report including the yachts paperwork, is forwarded to the certifying authority, and upon approval a certificate is issued.

Sailing & Motor Yachts

MCA coding applies to both sailing and motor yachts operating commercially under the UK red Ensign flag.

Sailing yachts must meet requirements covering stability, safety equipment, deck condition, crew certification and rig inspection.

Have specific requirements for machinery, fuel systems and firefighting equipment covering all aspects of safe commercial operation.

Need MLC Inspection Too?

MCA coding inspections are often combined with MLC Inspections (Maritime Labour Convention). Joe can carry out both in a single visit where possible.
